Local News in Brief : Shipyard Safety Said Improving
Conditions have improved significantly at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard since early this year when Navy inspectors gave it a rare unsatisfactory safety rating, the yard’s labor union chief said Tuesday.
Frank Griffin, acting president of the yard’s Metal Trades Council, said the unsatisfactory rating issued by the naval inspector general “does not equate to finding (the shipyard) an unsafe facility.”
The Times reported Sunday that Navy inspectors found hundreds of violations during a nine-day visit in January. Shortcomings included industrial machines lacking guards and so many workers without safety glasses or hearing protection that inspectors stopped counting the violations after the second day.
Griffin said labor and management are working together to improve safety at the yard.
