Local News in Brief : Waste Plant Near School Opposed
The Los Angeles Board of Education has voted 7 to 0 to oppose the construction of a hazardous waste disposal plant near Huntington Park High School, one of the largest high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“Serious concern exists that students and staff may be at risk” if the facility, to be operated by Chem Clear of Los Angeles, is allowed to be built on property located at 3165 E. Slauson Ave. in Vernon, according to the resolution authored by board members Leticia Quezada and Julie Korenstein. The facility would handle such substances as cyanide waste, concentrated acid waste, concentrated alkaline waste and hexavalent chromium waste.
The site is less than 1,000 feet from the high school, a year-round campus with 3,700 students and 300 teachers and other employees.
District officials will appeal to the state Department of Health Services and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prohibit construction of the plant so close to school grounds.
