Federal prosecutors allege that a UC San Diego student acted deliberately and not in self-defense when she bit an FBI agent during a confrontation at a campus job fair in May, 1987. The allegation against student Kristen Crabtree was contained in new papers filed Monday by Assistant U.S. Atty. Kevin McInerney. Crabtree is scheduled to go to trial Sept. 20 on a charge of assaulting FBI agent Marene Allison. In August, 1987, Chief U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson Jr. dismissed an assault charge against Crabtree, but his decision later was overturned by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. During the job fair, Crabtree attempted to photograph Allison, and a verbal confrontation ensued. The student contends she bit the agent only after Allison grabbed her. Subject to Thompson’s approval at a hearing Monday, McInerney said the government plans to introduce uncharged incidents of a similar nature to enhance its case against Crabtree. Thompson rejected a defense motion this week asking that the case be dismissed for outrageous government misconduct.
