Over the impassioned objections of the prosecutor, who asked for a six-year prison term, a judge in San Jose sentenced a convicted cocaine dealer to stage benefit rock concerts for juvenile drug treatment programs. Concert promoter Dan Nelson, 26, had been convicted of offering cocaine for sale, possessing the drug for sale and carrying a weapon during the undercover narcotics transaction in which he was arrested. Under the sentence, handed down by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Paul R. Teilh, Nelson must donate 1,820 hours of community service work and pay a $5,000 fine. Nelson, who has no previous record, was also sentenced to a year in the county jail but was expected to be allowed to work during the day and spend his evenings at home with an electronic monitor clamped to his ankle.
