The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department admitted it violated the rights of desert TV station KESQ when it seized videotape that a news crew shot during a drug raid. After inviting news reporters from KESQ and another station to document the June 22 drug raid, the department served a search warrant and took the tape, news director Richard Lerner said. “Upon reviewing the incident, the Sheriff’s Department now recognizes that the issuance and execution of the search warrant was inconsistent with the rights of KESQ-TV under the federal Privacy Protection Act of 1980, the California Shield Law and the California Constitution,” Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Throne said. The department agreed to return the tape.
