Local news in Brief : President of Whittier College to Resign

Eugene S. Mills announced Friday that he will resign next June as president of Whittier College and the Whittier College School of Law to write a book about Elderhostel Inc., an academic organization for senior citizens.

Mills, president of the private liberal arts college since 1979, said he announced his plans so trustees will have a year in which to hire a successor. Before becoming president of Whittier, Mills spent five years as president of the University of New Hampshire. He holds a doctorate in psychology from the Claremont Graduate School.

The 63-year-old administrator has been chairman of the Elderhostel board of directors for three years and a board member for 10 years. He said his book will be about the growth and development of Elderhostel, an organization for people over 60 that was founded in 1975 and has 165,000 participants in 40 countries.
