A 28-year-old man who suffered from epilepsy drowned at a swimming pool at the Miramar Naval Air Station.

Lawrence Paul Raviart of Chula Vista was pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital Sunday, a little more than half an hour after he was pulled from the enlisted personnel’s pool at the Navy base.

Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley said Monday that, even though Raviart was an epileptic, the official cause of death was drowning and that Raviart did not suffer an epileptic attack while in the water.

Raviart was spending the afternoon at the pool with his sister and cousin, who is in the Navy.

Kelley said head pool lifeguard Seth Borroft asked everyone to get out of the pool about 4 p.m. so he could make a routine inspection. As he was checking the pool, he saw Raviart at the bottom of the deep end and dived in.

The lifeguard pulled Raviart from the pool and applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation as others called for paramedics, Kelley said.
