NBC News correspondent Richard Valeriani, a 27-year veteran with the network, has resigned to take a job with Shearson Lehman Hutton Inc. The New York brokerage firm is expected to announce details of his position this week. Although his contract with the network was to run through July, the Washington Post reported that Valeriani notified NBC of his decision to leave Aug. 26, three days before his 56th birthday. Like another recent NBC defector, John Hart, who resurfaced as anchor of “World Monitor” on the Discovery Channel Monday night, Valeriani said that in recent years he has felt under-utilized in “an age of shrinkage” for all network news operations.
