Garvey Schools Name Trustee Without Vote

Five months after Judy Chu resigned her position on the Garvey school board, a replacement has been selected.

Antoinette Fabela of Rosemead is scheduled to be installed at next Thursday’s board meeting.

Fabela got the position because she was the only person who had filed to run in the Nov. 8 election to fill the post. Chu resigned when she was elected to the Monterey Park City Council last April.

The board had the authority to appoint someone to fill Chu’s position, which expires Nov. 24, 1989. But board chairman Jim Smith said the four board members deadlocked 2-2 in trying to choose among the four district residents, including Fabela, who had applied earlier in the summer.

Elizabeth Diaz, who ran unsuccessfully for the post last year, John Nunez, a former board member who also lost last year, and Daniel Tolentino were the three others who applied. But none of the three filed to run for the seat.

When the board was unable to agree on a replacement, an election was necessary. But the county registrar-recorder notified school officials on Aug. 29 that because only Fabela had filed to run, an election would not be needed.

That will save the district between $10,000 to $11,000 in election expenses, according to Supt. Roger Temple.

The district has kindergarten through eighth-grade students in portions of Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel.

Fabela, 34, operates a day-care center in Monterey Park.
