Long Beach : Transit System to Observe Free Fare Day Oct. 1

Share

Long Beach Transit is going to thank its riders on its 25th anniversary by offering a free fare day Oct. 1, the agency’s Board of Directors has decided.

On that Saturday, riders will be able to catch any bus for free, a policy designed to introduce more riders to the public transit system. “Long Beach Transit Passenger Appreciation Day” will coincide with the Long Beach Centennial’s grand finale celebration, which will feature a downtown parade, laser light show, concert and other events.

The free fares are expected to cost an additional $12,000 in subsidies. While fares have been waived on days in the past to promote ridership on certain bus lines, the appreciation day will mark the first time that all lines have been free.

“It’s our way of commemorating our 25th anniversary of service and of thanking our riders and the entire community for their support over the past quarter century,” said Laurence W. Jackson, president and general manager, in a prepared statement. The public transit system was launched in the fall of 1963.
