A motorist suspected of shooting a bicyclist because he cut him off has been identified by police as Federico Solorio of Santa Ana.

Solorio, 41, was being held in Orange County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a small amount of cocaine, Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said Friday.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. Wednesday, after cyclist Michael Sanchez, 25, of Santa Ana cut in front of Solorio at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Raitt Street, Thomas said.

A Santa Ana Police Department traffic investigator, a civilian who was on his way to write up another accident, arrived at the intersection as the driver jumped out of his car and began arguing with Sanchez, according to Thomas.

Investigator Domingo Cabrera saw the suspect “push the victim and the bicycle to the pavement,” Thomas said. “When the victim tried to get up, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and shot him in the neck.”

The driver fled from the intersection in his car. Cabrera chased him, and was joined in pursuit by Santa Ana police officers, who eventually arrested Solorio and found a small amount of cocaine in his car, Thomas said.

Sanchez was reported in good condition Friday at UCI Medical Center.
