CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bellwether Straw Vote

Dukakis was the heavy favorite for President in a straw poll of voters in Crook County, Ore., which has an unblemished record for picking presidential winners dating back 108 years.

Dukakis was the choice of 57% (600 votes) of more than 1,000 people responding to a survey conducted by Crestview Cable Television. Bush was picked by 42% (447).

Crook County, located in north-central Oregon, has never been wrong in picking the winner of the popular vote in a presidential race since the county was formed in 1882.
