The World : Heavy Combat in Salvador
El Salvador’s military command said heavy fighting in northern rebel strongholds left more than 80 leftist guerrillas and government troops killed or wounded. Col. Galileo Torres said rebels using mortars attacked the El Paraiso garrison, headquarters of the 4th Army Brigade, in Chalatenango province, 37 miles north of the capital of San Salvador. Nine soldiers and five guerrillas died in the attack, while 12 government troops were wounded, he said. Torres also said there were a series of clashes in northern Morazon province between government units and guerrillas, with 50 rebels killed or wounded. Five soldiers were wounded, he said.
