Local News in Brief : School Board to Appoint Trustee
Seeking to avoid a costly special election, El Segundo school trustees have voted to appoint a replacement for trustee Andrew Wallet, who resigned.
Under state law, trustees must make the appointment by late October, board President David Jones said Thursday. Anyone who lives in El Segundo may apply, he said.
Although Wallet’s term expired in 1991, his replacement will have to stand for reelection in November, 1989, when three other board seats will also be filled.
Under state law, trustees can either fill a vacancy by appointment or hold a special election. However, such an election could cost the district $10,000 or more, school officials have said.
Wallet, elected to the board last year after criticizing board members for lack of leadership, informed trustees in August that he was resigning. In an interview last week, Wallet said he was leaving because he was moving to the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
