Convicted bomber and Mormon documents forger Mark Hofmann was in critical condition Thursday from an apparent drug overdose, a hospital official said.

Utah Health Sciences Center spokesman John Dwan said a medical helicopter was rushed to Utah State Prison after state Corrections Department officials said they had a critically ill inmate. He said Hofmann was in “critical and unstable condition and comatose.”

Hofmann, 33, is serving five years to life in prison following his January, 1987, plea agreement. Hofmann admitted killing two people with homemade pipe bombs on Oct. 15, 1985, to cover up his secret career as a forger of Mormon and other historical documents.

Corrections Department spokesman Juan Benavidez said Hofmann had been prescribed a sleeping medication, but he did not know what it was or the dosage.
