David Frost and Don Hammond shot four-under-par 67s Thursday to share a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $600,000 Bank of Boston golf tournament at Sutton, Mass.

Frost, 14th on this year’s money list with $436,140 but still seeking his first PGA Tour victory, shot 34-33 on the 7,110-yard Pleasant Valley Country Club course but complained about the wind and cold he endured due to his 7:38 a.m. starting time.

Hammond, who has won only the 1986 Bob Hope Classic in six years on the tour, shot 35-32 after rushing into the pro shop and buying a sweater before teeing off a half-hour behind Frost.

Tour officials and players estimated that temperatures were in the 50s and the winds at approximately 25 m.p.h., creating an uncomfortable chill factor during the early-morning hours.

Fuzzy Zoeller posted an erratic 68 that included three birdies and four bogeys on the front side before he rallied to birdie three of the last four holes. That tied him with Larry Rinker, Steve Pate and D.A. Weibring.

Lennie Clements, Nick Price and Ray Stewart were next at 69. Stewart was runner-up in this tournament last year.

George Archer, the 1984 winner, overcame a triple-bogey to shoot a 70 that put him in a large group, which also included Ben Crenshaw, Joey Sindelar and 1978 winner John Mahaffey.

Defending champion Sam Randolph shot a 71 and was in another large group at even par, along with the 1980 champion, Wayne Levi, plus Bobby Wadkins and Roger Maltbie.

Susie Redman, Kathryn Young and Cathy Johnston, all non-winners on the LPGA tour, shot three-under-par 69s and shared a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $225,000 Safeco tournament at Kent, Wash.

Young earned her place in the tie with consecutive birdies on her last two holes.

Severiano Ballesteros of Spain shot a 7-under-par 64 to take a four-stroke lead in the first round of the $680,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at St. Nom La Bretche, France.

Craig Parry of Australia and Briton Mark James are tied for second at 68.

Five players, including defending champion Ian Woosnam of Wales, are at 69.
