Area Roundup : Lendl to Play in Newport Beach Event

Ivan Lendl will be one of the celebrities competing in the Jim Slemons Kings of the Court tournament Tuesday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The tournament will benefit the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis.

UC Irvine will face USC in a doubles match at 5 p.m.

Lendl and Roscoe Tanner will face Bob Lutz and Rick Leach in the featured match at 6:45 p.m.

A dinner and silent auction will follow the tournament.

Speedway motorcyclist Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa leads a field of riders into the final round of the $40,000 national qualifying series at 8 tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Schwartz has scored 80 points in four previous rounds that determine the 14 riders who will compete in the U.S. Championship on Oct. 8 at Costa Mesa. Schwartz has dropped only four points in four meetings.

Steve Lucero of Riverside trails Schwartz with 74 points, followed by Dubb Ferrell of Brea (52), Eddie Ingels of Richmond (43) and Brad Oxley of San Clemente (40).

Sam Ermolenko of Cypress and Robert Pfetzing of Santa Ana already have clinched berths in the championship by finishing first and second, respectively, in the American Final at Long Beach four months ago.

The racing format features scratch racing only with a field of the top 19 riders in Southern California and the top 5 riders from Northern California.

The U.S. Wave Ski Surfing Championships will be Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m., at the Huntington Beach pier.

The tournament will run through Sunday. Admission is free.

The American Boxing Federation will hold a weekly boxing card on Tuesday nights at Champions Bar and Grill in Huntington Beach to raise funds for the Special Olympics.

The card will begin at 8 p.m. with six fights scheduled. Admission is $7.50 for adults 21 years of age or older.
