The FBI is investigating dozens of contracts issued by the real estate department of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit network since 1985, looking for evidence that land appraisers working for the transit agency had to pay kickbacks in return for jobs, the Tribune of Oakland reported. Investigators told the newspaper that they are also scrutinizing appraisal contracts to determine whether any private contractors failed to perform work they were paid to do. Three BART maintenance managers have been charged in a related investigation with accepting thousands of dollars in bribes from FBI operatives who posed as maintenance contractors.
