Larry Rinker shot a 6-under-par 65 Saturday to tie Steve Pate and D.A. Weibring for the lead in the third round of the $600,000 Bank of Boston golf tournament at Sutton, Mass.

Pate and Weibring, who shared the second-round lead, shot 69s and were even with Rinker at 8-under-par 205, one shot ahead of Fuzzy Zoeller, who led for much of the day but dropped back after a double bogey on No. 17 and finished with a 69.

Rinker and veteran J.C. Snead made the biggest moves of the day. Snead had a 64, one shot off the course record, to go from 1 over par to 6 under par and move into a four-way tie at 207 with Bill Sander (69), Wayne Levi (69) and David Frost (70).

Arnold Palmer, 5 under par for the day after the first five holes, rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to salvage a 4-under-par 68 and take a three-shot lead at 133 after two rounds of the $325,000 Crestar PGA Seniors tournament at Richmond, Va.

He missed “a good birdie putt” on the 17th before sinking a downhill putt on No. 18. Playing partner Bobby Nichols, needing to make a 4-foot putt that would pull him within a shot, missed his birdie try after Palmer had made his, and settled for a 69 and a total of 136. That tied him for second place with Walt Zembriski, whose 66 was the best round of the day in intermittent rain on the 6,644-yard Hermitage Country Club course.

Defending champion Jan Stephenson shot a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead in the $225,000 LPGA Safeco tournament at Kent, Wash.

Stephenson, who has 16 victories in 15 years on the LPGA tour but is winless this year, has a total of 6-under-par 210 after three rounds on the 6,222-yard Meridian Valley Country Club course.

Juli Inkster shot the lowest round of the tournament so far, a 7-under-par 65, to move into a second-place tie with JoAnne Carner, Beth Daniel and rookie Danielle Ammaccapane at 211. Carner shot a 70, Daniel a 71 and Ammaccapane a 68.

Second-round leader Susie Redman slipped back after a 74 and was at 213.

Severiano Ballesteros shot a 3-under-par 68 to stretch his lead to six strokes with a 198 total after three rounds of the $680,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at St. Nom La Breteche, France.
