It’s gone beyond dire straits for Dire Straits, says bandleader Mark Knopfler. It’s official: he is putting the band to rest so he can spend more time with his family and work on other projects. “I wish I had 72 hours in a day, but I don’t,” Knopfler told the Boston Globe before performing with Eric Clapton at the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts over the weekend. “I want to spend more time at home with my two little boys (10-month-old twins Benjamin and Joseph) so I couldn’t possibly tour to the extent that I have been.” Knopfler also plans to do more movie soundtrack work and make a solo album. But the Straits aren’t completely history: “I’ll always like playing with those guys and through the years I’m sure I will . . . but I don’t know what shape it will take.”
