College Roundup : UCLA Wins Irvine Water Polo Event

UCLA defeated Cal State Long Beach and Stanford Sunday to win the 22nd annual UC Irvine water polo tournament at Heritage Park.

Hank Peterson scored three goals, as the Bruins defeated Long Beach, 10-7. Javier Escobar then scored four goals in UCLA’s 10-5 win over Stanford.

The Bruins, ranked No. 1 in the nation, finished 7-0 in the tournament. California was second with a 6-1 record, losing only to UCLA, 9-7, on Saturday. The Bears defeated Stanford, 4-3, and Long Beach, 10-9, in sudden-death on Sunday.

In the Long Beach match, California’s Chris Humbert scored with one second left in regulation to tie the score, 7-7. The score remained tied, 9-9, after one overtime period. Humbert scored the game-winner in the sudden-death period.

Long Beach finished third and Stanford fourth. Both had 3-3 records, but the 49ers defeated the Cardinal, 9-8, on Saturday.

In the consolation bracket, USC defeated UC San Diego, 10-5, and UC Irvine, 10-7, to finish in fifth.

Rod Carver led the Trojans with four goals against the Anteaters. Tom Warde scored three goals for Irvine.

Warde scored five goals and Skylar Parker four, as Irvine defeated Fresno State, 15-8, to finish sixth in the tournament.

Warde was the leading scorer in the tournament with 22 goals. Peterson was second with 21.

In men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 3, Cal Lutheran 0--Goalie Dammon Ellis made seven saves in recording the shutout in a nonconference match at Irvine. Jim Malaver scored off a pass from Fred Bonilla at the 19-minute mark to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Darren Bedolla passed to Jeff Pane, who scored to make it 2-0. Mike Perisi scored, again on a pass from Bedolla, with 10 minutes left for a 3-0 lead. Irvine is 2-3.

Illinois State 1, Chapman 0 (overtime)--Alex Umanskey scored his second goal of the year with an assist from Jim Wolfe with a minute left in overtime to lead the Redbirds (3-2) over the Panthers (4-3) in Normal, Ill.

In women’s soccer:

Chapman 1, San Francisco State 1 (overtime)--Chapman freshman Stassi DiMassis extended her scoring streak to five games with her eighth goal 22 minutes into the game.
