On L.A.’s Mean Streets

Civility on the part of drivers is not at an end in Los Angeles, but responsible traffic planning is (“The End of Civility” by Paul Dean, Aug. 26). The lack of a sensible traffic scheme drives thousands of motorists each day to run red lights, speed up, tailgate and commit dozens of other moronic acts that endanger and enrage other motorists and pedestrians.

Traffic safety specialist Forrest Wilkins says that running red lights has become an “epidemic.” This is hardly surprising since one can hardly drive two blocks without encountering a traffic light. Worse, few of the signals are synchronized.
