A jet airplane engine “blew up” today while being worked on near the aeronautics shop at the College of San Mateo, injuring three students, one seriously, police said.

The blast occurred about 9:15 a.m. in a fenced-in test area outside the college’s aeronautics lab, said San Mateo Police Sgt. Phil Derr. The campus is about 15 miles south of San Francisco and is part of the California community college system. Derr said four young students were working on the jet turbine when it malfunctioned, went out of control and spun into very high revolutions, finally “blowing up” and sending shards of metal flying around the area.
