Drug Testing for Officers

I certainly disagree with the column in every aspect.

Let’s put the leash back on the “dog of war.” I am wondering if soldier Summers thinks that enlisted men don’t have honor or dignity either. Is your officer corps above and beyond the laws of this country? Perhaps the officer corps is still living in a fantasy of princes, paupers, and serfdom. Traditionally officers came from the royalty and wealthy citizenry. However, this is 1988 and I’m sorry to say most of our officers come from the middle-class strata with a mentality befitting that position. What a boost to their egos to be treated like royalty.

Does Summers have any idea how many doctors, lawyers, congressmen, teachers, policemen, etc. have been enlisted men? Is he suggesting that they have no honor or dignity? Maybe the Navy lieutenant can have a commissioned officer observe her test to insure credibility and trustworthiness.

In fact the commander in chief has taken the test. If I remember correctly, a former commander in chief back in the ‘70s was forced to resign because of questionable honor and dignity, and he too was an officer. Everybody is equal in this country and nobody is above the law.
