Minnesota took a 3-0 lead in the third inning off Terry Clark (6-6). Greg Gagne led off with an infield single and John Moses followed with a hit-and-run single to right, sending Gagne to third. Tommy Herr then singled to drive home Gagne, with Moses taking third. Moses came home on a sacrifice fly by Randy Bush.

Kirby Puckett singled and took second when center fielder Dante Bichette threw out Herr attempting to advance to third. Angel Manager Cookie Rojas elected to walk Jim Dwyer intentionally, but Harper then drilled a single to score Puckett.

The Twins made it 5-0 in the fifth. Bush tripled and came home on a single by Puckett, chasing Clark, who yielded 12 hits in 4-plus innings. One out later, Dwyer hit an RBI double off Rich Monteleone.

California pulled within 5-2 in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Tony Armas and a run-scoring throwing error by third baseman Al Newman.

The Twins made it 6-2 in the eighth when Eric Bullock singled, stole second, took third on a sacrifice by Newman and scored on a passed ball by Darrell Miller.
