Local News in Brief : Body of Woman Left on Cathedral Steps
The badly decomposed body of a woman was found Friday in a box on the steps of St. Vibiana Cathedral’s rectory, the residence of Roman Catholic Archbishop Roger M. Mahony in downtown Los Angeles.
A cathedral employee, thinking it might contain a gift of clothing for the poor, hoisted the box onto a hand truck and wheeled it into the church before the body was discovered.
Police said the body is believed to be that of a woman, aged 35 to 40. Neither the cause nor the approximate time of death has been determined, according to John Dunkin, a police homicide supervisor.
Dunkin said the box was a large bicycle shipping crate tied with twine. It was first seen outside the church at 114 E. 2nd St. shortly after 8 a.m.
