Offshore Quake Shakes Tokyo for Half-Minute

TOKYO —
Tokyo and surrounding areas shook for almost half a minute today as a strong earthquake struck east of the capital. Police said there were no immediate signs of serious injuries or damage.
Central Meteorological Agency officials said the temblor hit at 5:23 p.m. and registered a preliminary magnitude of 5.9. The agency said the quake’s center was located off the eastern coast of Chiba about 30 miles below the seabed.
