Channel 2 sportscaster Keith Olbermann has apologized for implying earlier this week that Florence Griffith Joyner used steroids.
“We were one of the news organizations which reported the allegations against Florence Griffith Joyner,” Olbermann said on the air Thursday. “We did not mean to imply there was further evidence against her beyond the speculation of other athletes such as Joaquim Cruz. For our part, we apologize for any confusion we may have caused.”
Olbermann said he based his speculation on Cruz’s comments--"comments that were carried by several news organizations, including CNN, Brazilian television, The Los Angeles Times and this station.”
(The Times did not publish Cruz’s comments until after United Press International produced a tape verifying that Cruz had been quoted accurately, one day after Olbermann’s report.)
