Rep. Buddy MacKay captured the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Florida over state Insurance Commissioner Bill Gunter in the runoff of their heated contest. With 3,901 of 4,462 precincts, or 87%, reporting unofficial returns, MacKay had 312,245 votes, or 53%, to Gunter’s 281,965 votes, or 47%. MacKay will oppose fellow third-term Republican Rep. Connie Mack in November. Gunter had lost a 1974 Democratic Senate runoff and won a 1980 Senate runoff only to lose in the general election. Officials said turnout statewide appeared to be no more than 20%.
