Chargers’ Macek to Have Shoulder Surgery Today

Share

Charger center Don Macek will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder today and will miss Sunday’s game against New Orleans at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The exact nature of the injury is unknown, as is the amount of time Macek might lose beyond Sunday. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Gary Losse, Charger team physician.

“It’s been kind of an accumulation of injuries that have taken place in the 13 years of his career, and they’ve kind of come to a head in the last two weeks,” Charger Coach Al Saunders said.

Macek’s shoulder injury prevented him from practicing the week before last Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, and he practiced only once the previous week. He has played in 158 games for the Chargers to rank fifth on the team’s all-time list.

Macek will be replaced in the lineup by Dan Rosado, a second-year player who joined the Chargers during last year’s players’ strike and started three games at left guard. He suffered a pinched nerve on Nov. 3 and spent the rest of the season on injured reserve.
