Bill Elevating VA Gets House OK

WASHINGTON — The House approved today a conference-committee version of the bill elevating the Veterans Administration to a Cabinet-level department and sent it to the Senate for final congressional action. The VA would be the 14th federal government department under terms of the bill passed by voice vote in the House.
The plan got a major boost last November when President Reagan announced his support for creation of the new department. Reagan’s support was unexpected since he had taken office in 1981 vowing to eliminate two other Cabinet-level agencies--the Education and Energy departments.
