Two men linked to a drive-by shooting were killed when their car, being chased by a police helicopter, went out of control on an overpass and careened onto the Harbor Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

The two men were pronounced dead at the scene at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Richard Greenwood said. No one was injured in the earlier drive-by shooting that occurred west of downtown, police said.

The spectacular crash in the southbound lanes below the 4th Street overpass backed up freeway traffic for blocks in both directions for more than five hours. The car, a white Mustang convertible, landed upside down on the freeway.

“The Mustang hit a guardrail on the overpass, and the passenger was ejected,” Greenwood said. “He fell over onto the freeway.”

The driver, Jaime Banuelos, 24, went over the overpass with the car, landing on the freeway. The passenger was identified as Jose Barajas, 20.
