Chinese Official Encourages Better Police Schooling
Forty percent of China’s policemen have had less than 10 years of schooling, the nation’s top public security official said, calling for better-educated police.
Public Security Minister Wang Fang said last week that many police have no professional training, the official New China News Agency reported. Wang spoke at the Chinese People’s University of Police Officers, which has an enrollment of 1,500.
Officials blame low educational levels for police problems such as taking bribes, extorting money and gaining confession by torture.
In the first half of 1988 more than 2,100 policemen were punished for abuse of power.
