Local News in Brief : Council Rejects Retreat Idea

Share

The Lawndale City Council has rejected a proposal for a management retreat to smooth the sometimes-contentious relationships among council members and department heads.

The proposal by Councilwoman Carol Norman was defeated on a 3-2 vote, a split typical of the power struggle on the council. Councilmen Harold E. Hofmann, Dan McKenzie and Larry Rudolph voted against the proposal. Mayor Sarann Kruse and Norman favored it.

Norman said she had proposed the retreat, “hoping we on the council can bury the hatchet so we can serve the city better.”

Council members, city staff and Lawndale residents have complained in recent months about the combative nature of council meetings. Last month, a city administrator called for a grand jury investigation of allegations of City Hall scandals, including a loss of $1.6 million in speculative securities investments.
