Mississippi’s oyster season opens next Monday amid dire projections that the 1988 harvest would likely be one-twentieth of what it was only five years ago. Gulf Coast officials say erratic weather patterns and pollution have combined to devastate the local oyster reefs. This season’s harvest is expected to be fewer than 20,000 sacks, compared with the 365,560 sacks taken in 1983.
