Soviets Pledge Afghanistan Aid
The Soviet Union today pledged $600 million to the United Nations’ campaign for the reconstruction of Afghanistan and repatriation of millions of Afghan refugees, the program’s coordinator said.
The coordinator, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, told reporters that the Soviet pledge was the largest to date since an appeal for donations went out in June. His Geneva-based office, the U.N. Humanitarian and Economic Assistance Programs Relating to Afghanistan, estimates that rebuilding that war-shattered nation will cost more than $2 billion.
