‘Cinderella,’ ‘E.T.’ Ready to Launch

The big home-video news in the last two weeks is the release of Disney’s “Cinderella,” which debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard magazine rental chart. Though not expected to be a rental blockbuster--low-priced kidvid product like this never is--it will certainly be a hot sales item. Retailers and distributors bought 4.3 million copies of “Cinderella,” which will have a few weeks at the top of the sales chart before the “E.T.” reign begins early next month. “Masquerade,” a romantic thriller starring Rob Lowe and Meg Tilly, debuted at No. 17 on the rental chart. Look for this one to be a Top 10 fixture. Other debuts: the Judge Reinhold comedy “Vice Versa” (No. 23) and the Kelly McGillis thriller “The House on Carroll Street” (No. 38). Both have the potential to at least crack the Top 15.

In this thriller, an FBI agent (Sidney Poitier) and a woodsman (Tom Berenger) chase a killer all over the Northwest. While lauding Poitier, some critics called it far-fetched. But its star power is overpowering any reviewer put-downs. In two weeks, “Shoot to Kill” shot up to No. 11.
