Local News in Brief : Senior-Citizen Housing Proposed

Share

The South Bay Hospital District, which funds public health programs in the three beach cities, is requesting proposals from developers for a senior-citizen housing complex with health-care facilities on the site of the former St. Michael’s Hospital in Hermosa Beach.

Skilled nursing or immediate-care facilities and a physician’s office would be part of the complex. The district bought the property in 1983 and the dilapidated building will be demolished.

Philip Valera, district executive director, said between 125 and 150 elderly residents of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach would live in one- and two-bedroom apartments. Facilities such as a dining area and a swimming pool would be in a common area. Valera said no decisions have been made about fees for residents or the income level the project would be aimed at. Development costs haven’t been estimated yet.

The senior housing, which Valera said could be built under a 50- to 60-year lease on the property, is a joint venture of the district and American Medical International Inc., which leased South Bay Hospital--including the St. Michael’s property--from the district in 1984. Development proposals are to be submitted by Dec. 5, Valera said.
