A small aircraft buzzed people strolling on the Champs Elysees today, then landed in the Paris suburbs near Versailles where police arrested the pilot, who is suspected of being the notorious “Black Baron” who made night flights over Paris last month.

Police said the low-flying aircraft appeared about 10:30 a.m. from behind the Arc de Triomphe, followed the path of the grand boulevard and buzzed pedestrians. It disappeared in the direction of the Elysee Palace, the residence and headquarters of French President Francois Mitterrand, and other government buildings. Police sources said they acted on a tip from a retired officer who spotted the plane landing 12 miles away.
