The Los Angeles Dodgers could star in the coming revival of television’s “Mission Impossible.” They’ve got the daring getaway down to a fine art.

Less than a week ago New York Mets fans were gloating. Their team had beaten the Dodgers 10 times out of 11 during the regular season, the Dodgers’ ace stopper had just been thrown out of a key game. Dodger fans were getting ready to take it on the chin one more time.

Then the Dodgers did it again--putting together pitching, a timely home run or two and a lot of hustle and heart--and those of little faith feel delightfully, gleefully wrong today. The Dodgers are National League champions, going on World Champions.

Dodger fans wore long faces all season, worrying when Pedro Guerrero didn’t hit, then again when he was traded. They worried when Fernando Valenzuela hurt his arm, and they worried that Orel Hershiser wasn’t getting enough runs.

Old habits are hard to break. Some Dodger fans are already worrying about the Oakland Athletics. Our view is that it can’t hurt. Look how far worrying has taken them already.
