Manville Corp., preparing to emerge from six years of bankruptcy, announced record earnings Sunday for the third quarter on improved sales of its fiber glass and forest products. Denver-based Manville said net income totaled $53.5 million, or $1.96 a share, up 10% from $48.6 million, or $1.76 a share in the year-ago quarter. Sales rose 6.6 % to $584.3 million. Manville filed for Chapter 11 protection in 1982 while being deluged with asbestos injury and property damage lawsuits. By 1986, property damage claims alone had come to a staggering $85 billion. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the last challenge to Manville’s reorganization plan.
