Free agent Bill Walton contacted the New York Knicks last summer about possibly playing for them, an official of the Knicks said.

New York General Manager Al Bianchi told the Boston Herald: “We talked to Bill with the idea of bringing him into camp. But nothing came of it.”

The oft-injured Walton became an unrestricted free agent at the end of last season, but Celtics officials felt they might resign him.

Walton, who will turn 36 Nov. 5, underwent major reconstructive surgery on his right foot in July 1987. He did not play last season, but collected his salary, estimated at about $450,000. Walton underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle Sept. 13.

In a move that surprised Celtics officials, Walton visited Italy last summer to explore the possibility of playing in there.

Upon his return to the United States, and before his ankle surgery, Walton met with Knicks officials.

Dr. F. William Wagner, who removed the bone spurs from Walton’s ankle, said it was not unreasonable for Walton to be back on the court in 2 months.

In the meantime, Celtics officials said they are actively seeking another backup center.
