Apple Computer Inc.’s profit for the year jumped 84% to $400.3 million. Revenue topped $4 billion for the first time. The Cupertino, Calif.-based firm attributed the results to strong sales of its Macintosh personal computers to business customers. Microsoft Corp., a Redmond, Wash.-based software maker, also reported a hefty boost in profit: First-quarter net income was $36.6 million, up 72% from a year ago. The company attributed the gain to strong revenue from all sectors, with overseas business accounting for 48.8% of sales. Wang Laboratories fared less well: The Lowell, Mass.-computer maker reported earnings of $13.1 million, down nearly 42% from a year ago. The company said gains in international revenue were offset by sluggish domestic demand.
