Local News in Brief : Westminster : Spanish Explorers Topic of Talk by Former Envoy

Julian Nava, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, will discuss the role of Spanish explorers in the history of the United States at 9 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10322 Bolsa Ave.

The public is invited to the free lecture given for members of the Hispanic Family History Researchers, an Orange County-based, non-sectarian organization. The group is designed to help beginners in researching family histories and to facilitate sharing of genealogical data.

In addition, lawyer George Ryskamp, author of “Tracing Your Hispanic Heritage,” will discuss his genealogical research in Spain.

Nava is on the U.S. Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee, which is preparing for an international celebration of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus and his crew in 1492. The committee aims to form new bonds of unity between Anglos and Latinos through activities that combine reflection and celebration. Nava also is co-founder of the Hispanic American Descendants Foundation, a national nonprofit group formed to encourage understanding and pride for those whose ancestors came from Spain.
