City Atty. James K. Hahn has delivered $5,000 to the Union Rescue Mission, bringing to $156,328 the amount of donations the prosecutor’s office has obtained from slumlords for organizations assisting the homeless and underprivileged.

The two $2,500 checks given to George Caywood, executive director of the downtown Los Angeles mission, were made out by Mark Kaplan, 48, of Brentwood as part of his sentence for violations found at a Westlake apartment building he owned.

Under a program initiated by Hahn two years ago, slumlords are required to make the contributions as one condition of being placed on probation. Las Familias del Pueblo has received the most money under the program, $24,446, and the Union Rescue Mission has received the second-largest amount, $15,000, Hahn said.
