Local News in Brief : Teachers Stage One-Day Walkout
South Pasadena teachers are expected back in their classrooms today after a one-day walkout Wednesday.
All but 19 of 141 classroom teachers picketed the city’s five schools, demanding higher pay and a binding arbitration clause in their contract.
Despite the absence of 28% of the district’s 3,500 students, the schools were kept open by the district, which employed 115 substitute teachers for the day.
The teachers who are members of the Teachers’ Assn. of South Pasadena have been working without a contract for more than a year.
They contend that pay for experienced teachers in South Pasadena is lower than that of any other of the 43 school districts in Los Angeles County except Compton.
Starting salary in the district for teachers with no experience is $21,921 a year. Teachers at the top of the district scale earn an annual $37,606.
