More than 100 anti-abortion protesters were arrested in Bridgeport, Conn., while a noisy, rain-soaked protest in Boston drew as many counterdemonstrators as demonstrators. The crowd of protesters in front of the Summit Women’s Center in Bridgeport delayed the opening of the clinic for more than an hour, witnesses said. In Boston, about 300 people turned out for a protest. Activists on both sides of the issue claimed they each had more supporters in the crowd. A Boston police spokesman said three abortion opponents were arrested on disorderly conduct charges as they sat on the sidewalk in front of the downtown Gynacare clinic. About 30 helmeted officers stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the clinic to clear a path for arriving patients.
