“Far Side” cartoonist Gary Larson leaves for a 14-month hiatus from drawing Saturday. His farewell cartoon pays tribute to “the little people” who have contributed to his popular strip, including Jessica Van Horn of Fenwick Farms, who appeared “in the role of ‘the cow.’ ” Until Larson returns to drawing on Jan. 1, 1990, the Universal Press Syndicate will distribute panels from the early days of the strip, when it appeared in only a few dozen papers.
