50 Survive Peru Jetliner Crash
A Peruvian state-owned airliner carrying 69 passengers crashed today high in the Andes, killing 19 people and injuring 50, the airline president said. The Aeroperu plane split in two when it crashed shortly after takeoff near the city of Juliaca, 540 miles southeast of Lima, airline President Jose Guerra said.
Guerra did not give identities or nationalities of the victims, but said several were foreigners. Several of the injured had severe burns, he said. The plane was a Dutch-made Fokker F-28, bound for Arequipa, Peru’s second largest city.
