La Jolla is the most expensive bedroom community in the United States, according to a recent study by RELO, a Chicago-based association of 1,300 independent real estate brokers who specialize in arranging moves for corporate employees.
The average home in the coastal La Jolla area sells for $1.1 million, placing it ahead of Alpine, N.J., where the average home sells for $1.06 million. Rancho Santa Fe placed ninth on the costliest-suburb list, with an average sale price of $922,000, RELO said.
More than half the 75 real estate markets on the RELO list are in the tri-state New York metropolitan area.
